Alphabeat-Moderator der ersten Stunde Stefan Steinbauer lebt ja jetzt schon eine Weile (ca 2,5 Jahre) in Wien und versorgt uns von dort aus mit den neuesten Tunes. Er veröffentlicht auch als DJ BEAT Mixes in limitierter Auflage, d.h. nur für den Freundeskreis und Interessierte, und tritt auch hie und da auf. Auch sein Weihnachstmix 2005 groovt vor sich hin, swingt in der Disco und rollt böse mit den Bässen. Um euch die Wartezeit bis zur Veröffentlichung des neuen Coldcut Albums(27.01.) zu verkürzen, hier wieder ein paar Background-Infos:

Coldcut hatten nicht nur als Produzenten einen großen Einfluss, sie prägten auch die Londoner Clubkultur in den 80ern stark. Zu dieser Zeit war Bristol , vor allem aufgrund des Wild Bunch Soundsystems (aus dem später Massive Attack hervorging), das eigentliche Zentrum des britischen Hip Hop. In London hatten die kommerziellen Discos lange die Oberhand. Unglaublich aber wahr, Coldcut versorgen uns schon seit ca. 20 Jahren mit fantastischer Musik und veröffentlichen, wie schon erwähnt, demnächst ein neues Album. Grund genug ein wenig über die zwei Engländer Jonathan More [Kunstlehrer] und Matt Black [Computerprogrammierer] zu erzählen.

Ihre erste Platte „Say Kids, What Time Is It?“ erschien im Januar 1987, und zwar kurioser Weise als US-Import.
„Wir konnten die Platten besser verkaufen und der Importstatus half, die unsere Spur zu verwischen.“ meint Jonathan. Schließlich waren Coldcut Pioniere des Samplings in Europa und natürlich bestand auch „Say Kids“ aus zahlreichen Stücken der Musik anderer Leute, also illegalen – nicht „geclearten“ – Samples.
Absolut legendär ist ihr Remix von Eric B. & Rakims „Paid in Full“, den sie an nur einem Tag fertig gestellt haben.
Der mehrfach hintereinander aufgenommene Beat wurde auf einer Tonbandmaschine zusammengeschnitten und als Loop die rhythmische Grundlage des Tracks. „Den Loop spielten wir dann auf das 24-Kanal Mischpult des Studios, und das war das Fundament. Alles andere wurde von Platte eingespielt und zusammeneditiert.“ sagt Matt.
